According to Superherohype reports, Doctor Strange 3 and Shang-Chi 2 are rumored to be released sometime in 2027. However, Marvel Studios has not yet officially confirmed anything about the two eagerly anticipated productions. Shang-Chi 2 was reportedly deprioritized when Jonathan Majors left the production and the Kang storyline was cancelled.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, starring Simu Liu in the role of Shaun, made its debut back in 2021. Liu has been quoted as saying that a sequel was “definitely happening” though he did not indicate when the production would be released, noting that “A lot of it is above my pay grade.”
It’s also unclear whether Benjamin Cumberbatch, who appeared in the role of a heroic wizard in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), will be returning in Doctor Strange 3. However, Cumberbatch has indicated in an interview that he will be reprising his role of Stephen Strange in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled to debut in 2026.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay he wrote with Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham. The film, which grossed more than $432 million worldwide, made history by being the first Marvel Studios production with an Asian director and a predominantly Asian cast, one that included Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Yuen Wah, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley, and Tony Leung.
Destin Daniel Cretton reportedly will start work on the Shang-Chi sequel when he completes work on Spider-Man 4. He was quoted as saying: “I’m really excited not only to work with the Russo brothers again but also to have Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom. I think there’s going to be some really cool developments ahead, and I’m excited to see what happens next.”
