One Battle After Another: Video Review by Matthew Schuchman

I’ve been following Paul Thomas Anderson’s career from square one. My friend’s and I rented Sydney (I know they named it Hard Eight, but I still call it Sydney), when it his video stores shelves. Whether we were rolling on the floor laughing at a matchbook spontaneously combust in John C. Reilly’s pocket or being mesmerized by singular style that would broaden in Boogie Nights, we were all about the PTA train.

As the years went on, he would release banger after banger. And while I enjoyed his films post There Will Be Blood, they never seemed to capture the magic he once held in his fingers. With the hype over One Battle After Another gaining traction the second the first teaser hit, it seemed that maybe the pure form of PTA was back. Could One Battle After Another be the undisputed champion of both the 2025 film year and PTA’s career?

As a former revolutionary of the modern age, Bob Ferguson (Leonardo DiCaprio) now quieter life is thrown into turmoil when the dangerous and determined Army vet Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw (Sean Penn) comes back into the fray looking for Bob and his former colleagues. Not only is Bob’s life in danger, but that of his daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti). To save their lives, Bob will have to regain a part of the man he once was and throw all caution to the wind as one battle comes after another.
