Spider-Noir Interview(Black and White Version) : Creator Oren Uziel Reveals How They Reimagined the Spider-Man Universe

Exploring legacy, identity and moral decay through a fractured hero seeking purpose is often an enthralling experience. These themes are central to Spider-Noir, which creator Oren Uziel shaped into a standalone interpretation of the Marvel mythos as a crime drama.

The new show leans heavily into noir sensibilities, where memory is unreliable, justice is blurred and every choice carries consequence. The action series reimaginines familiar threads from the Spider-Man Noir comics and selectively echoing elements of the broader Spider-Verse. The franchise’s latest installment repositions its protagonist not as an extension of a shared cinematic universe, but as a solitary figure defined by grief, survival and reinvention.

Besides creating the project, Uziel also served as an executive producer and co-showrunner, alongside Steve Lightfoot. Spider-Noir stars Nicolas Cage as the protagonist, Ben Reilly. Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson.

Spider-Noir is a live-action series based on the Marvel comic Spider-Man Noir. Cage’s roles in Spider-Verse and Spider-Noir are both inspired by the comics.

On the television series, however, Ben Reilly has a different origin and storyline. He’s a unique iteration of the character who appeared in Into the Spider-Verse. Spider-Noir exists in a stand-alone universe and does’t directly connect to or continue any Sony or Marvel films.

Spider-Noir is also unique in the fact that for the first time ever, viewers can choose their own Spider-Man adventure. The show will be available to stream in two different visual styles, “Authentic Black & White” and “True-Hue Full Color.”

In Spider-Noir, Ben Reilly is a seasoned, down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York. He grapples with his past life, following a deeply personal tragedy, as the city’s one and only superhero.

Sony Pictures Television produced Spider-Noir exclusively for MGM+ and Prime Video. The drama will debut domestically on MGM+’s linear broadcast channel on May 25. The series will then premiere globally on Prime Video on May 27. The show’s eight episodes will be available as a binge release.
