Jon Watts has been pegged to direct the inaugural film in the upcoming “Star Wars” trilogy, which is set at Lucasfilm. The report initially came through super DanielRPK and later its accuracy was verified by sources including THR.

This is the Simon Kinberg-written trilogy occurring after the events of the sequel trilogy, including its final film, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker“, released in 2019.

Watts is best known for directing the first three “Spider-Man” films starring Tom Holland, which began with “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and concluded with “Spider-Man: No Way Home“. He has also contributed to Star Wars, not only as showrunner but also directing some episodes of the “Skeleton Crew” TV series on Disney+.

As a report said a director has been selected for the gig, but it didn’t say who. That report claimed production is picking up steam fast and could begin filming as early as 2027.

The report indicates that although the film hasn’t yet secured Disney’s approval, its development phase is farthest, following “Star Wars: Starfighter,” directed by Shawn Levy, which premiered in theaters the following year in May. Moreover, it is stated that Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker will have a role in the upcoming trilogy. Aside from “Starfighter” in May, next year will also see the original theatrical version of 1977’s “Star Wars” return to cinemas in February.
