One of last year’s most involving and exciting superhero movies was Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It earned an Oscar nomination for its visual effects, which include the titular ten rings, dragons, and a number of epic battle scenes.

Sean Walker, VFX Supervisor for Weta FX, is no stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having worked on films dating back to The Avengers. He was also one of the key people responsible for making the Women of Marvel sequence in Avengers: Endgame, featuring all the female superheroes, happen.

I had the chance to speak with Walker about which pieces of Shang-Chi he handled and what the biggest challenges and opportunities were, and what his company Weta FX continues to do.

Film Summary:

Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings” stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization. The film also stars Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy, with Michelle Yeoh as Ying Nan, and Tony Leung as Xu Wenwu, Shang-Chi’s father; as well as Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Yuen Wah, Ronny Chieng, Zach Cherry, and Dallas Liu.
