HBO Max’s new limited series Julia invites viewers to experience the delight of learning to cook with Julia Child (Sarah Lancashire) as she develops her show The French Chef on PBS. Supported by her husband Paul (David Hyde Pierce), Julia brings her relatable manner to an increasingly wide audience despite the doubts of many around her about the potential for her little cooking program.

I had the chance to speak with a number of the people involved in this show: actors Brittany Bradford, Fran Kranz, and Fiona Glascott, showrunner and executive producer Chris Keyser and creator Daniel Goldfarb, and food stylist Christine Tobin. They shared their own connections to Julia Child and how they worked to make this show an authentic and appetizing experience for all.

Series summary:

JULIA is inspired by Julia Child’s extraordinary life and her long-running television series, “The French Chef,” which pioneered the modern cooking show. Through Julia’s life and her singular joie de vivre, the series explores a pivotal time in American history – the emergence of public television as a new social institution, feminism and the women’s movement, the nature of celebrity and America’s cultural evolution. At its heart, the series is a portrait of a loving marriage with a shifting power dynamic.
