Russell Crowe will be joining Henry Cavill in the upcoming remake of Highlander by Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists. Crowe will be playing the role of mentor to Cavill’s character, Connor MacLeod, a role akin to that of Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, played by Sean Connery in the original film. Crowe and Cavill had recently appeared as a father-and-son duo in “Man of Steel.”

The “Highlander” reboot will be helmed by John Wick director  Chad Stahelski from a script by Michael Finch. Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt of United Artists will produce the project alongside Neal H. Moritz and Chad Stahelski’s production company 87Eleven Entertainment.

The original 1986 “Highlander” movie, directed by Russell Mulcahy, starred Christopher Lambert and Connery in a cult-classic saga about a group of immortals who engage in swordfights from ancient times to the present day.

In an article for msn.com, Stahelski was quoted as saying; “And we’re bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong, and seeing how it goes. There’s big opportunity for action. There’s a chance to play a character that not a lot of people get to play. And it’s a bit of a love story, but not how you think. On “John Wick”, I learned a lot on how to bend the storytelling a little… another kind of myth.

“My selling point was, to [Henry Cavill], look, you’ve got a guy that’s been alive for over 500 years. He’s the last person in the world that wanted to be in this situation. So you get to cover quite a broad spread of a character arc there. And you get to experience someone that’s trained over 500 years and sort of played [with many types of] martial arts…”

Crowe’s next project is playing the role of Adolf Hitler’s buddy Hermann Göring in “Nuremberg”, directed by James Vanderbilt for release by Sony Pictures Classics on November 7. Other of Crowe’s recent films include “Unaborn”, “Billion Dollar Spy”, and “Bear Country.”
