The Boondock Saints is getting a relaunch via Thunder Road and Dragonfly Films, but original director Troy Duffy will be stepping aside for a yet-unnamed successor. Duffy had helmed the original film in 1999 and its 2009 sequel The Boondock Saints: All Saints Day. While Duffy is stepping away from his directorial role, he reportedly plans to write a series of books about the Saints.

Returning to reprise their roles as Connor and Murphy MacManus will be stars Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery, with Billy Connolly returning to portray their father. The MacManus brothers are a pair of Irish fraternal twins who turned vigilante in fighting the criminal underworld in Boston.

The new film will mark a “universe expansion” of the franchise, according to Thunder Road and Dragonfly. Listed as producers are Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Luca Lee; Dragonfly’s Todd Meyers and Peter D. Graves; and Impossible Dream Entertainment’s Shaun Redick and Yvette Yates Redick. Also producing will be Troy Duffy and Don Carmody.

In announcing the new project, Thunder Road’s Iwanyk was quoted as saying, “When we were given the opportunity to help bring the MacManus brothers back to the screen, we jumped at the chance. The unique possibility of building on the iconic mythology and characters for all the long-time fans of the series, as well as opening it up to a whole new generation, is one that we couldn’t be more excited about.”

Dragonfly’s Meyers added, “From the moment I saw the first film, it has been my dream to be able to add to the amazing story of the Boondock Saints. I’ve been in discussions with Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus for over ten years to bring this dream to a reality.”

Thunder Road produced the John Wick films as well as the prequel series The Continental and Dev Patel’s action flick Monkey Man.
