Tom Cruise is not resting on his laurels as Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning nears its release date on May 23. In a recent interview on the Today Show in Australia, Cruise revealed he is working on sequels for the 2022 Top Gun: Maverick movie as well as the 1990 auto-racing thriller Days of Thunder.

He was quoted in the interview on Australia’s Today as saying: “Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible. It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick.”

Cruise added that “There’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now. I’m always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film. I just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, who did The Revenant, and we’ll be coming out with that. That was an extraordinary experience and Christopher McQuarrie and I are always working on several different films.”

The 62-year-old Cruise had earlier been quoted in The Hollywood Reporter as saying: “I actually said I’m going to make movies into my 80s; actually, I’m going to make them into my 100s.”

Both Top Gun: Maverick and Days of Thunder were tremendous box-office successes. Top Gun grossed $1.49 billion globally and Days of Thunder took in $157 million. The previous figures are not adjusted for inflation.

Released in May 2022, Top Gun: Maverick went on to become a box office smash, grossing $1.49 billion worldwide. The film, in which Cruise played the role of Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Days of Thunder grossed $157 million worldwide at the end of its theatrical run (not adjusted for inflation).

The upcoming film by Alejandro González Iñárritu will feature Cruise as well as Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons and Sophie Wilde. The yet-untitled movie expects to debut on October 2, 2026 as the story of the most powerful man on Earth who seeks to convince the world that he is humanity’s savior.
