Tony Awards Nominations 2024: The Complete List

Tony Awards Nominations 2024: The Complete List

Hell’s Kitchen and Stereophonic have received more Tony Awards nominations than any other production of the 2023-24 Broadway season. Each shows received 13 nominations this morning, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The former is a biographical musical about Alicia Keyes, while the latter is a dramatic stage play whose music was penned by American playwright David Adjmi.

The two productions’ tie-breaking nominations were followed by The Outsiders with 12, Cabaret with 9 and Appropriate with 8. The shows were the most nominated among the 36 eligible musicals and plays that opened on Broadway this past year.

The nominations were announced this morning on YouTube by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who’s known for his appearance in the Tony Award-winning musical comedy, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. He was joined by Tony Award-winning Hamilton actress, Renée Elise Goldsberry .

With its 13 nominations, Stereophonic became the most nominated play in Tony Awards history today. It received acting nods for almost the entire cast.

Several other shows also had most of their leading performers get nominated, including Days of Wine and Roses, which closed early. However, it received nominations for its leads Kelli O’Hara and Brian D’Arcy James. Merrily We Roll Along, meanwhile, received nominations for its three leads – Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez.

Stereophonic was also nominated for Best Score, which is considered a bit unusual since the production is a play. However, it does feature original songs that were written by former Arcade Fire member Will Butler for the fictional band that’s at the center of the story.

While the tracks in the play have been praised, the nomination is a bit unusual; most of the tunes featured in the production are delivered in snippets as part of the band’s recording process.

The Best Musical category was particularly unpredictable this year, with more than a dozen shows vying for a nomination. There is also no clear front runner, in terms of both box office performance and reviews.

Several other high-profile productions only received one nomination each, including The Great Gatsby; Gutenberg! The Musical!, which stars Book of Mormon alums Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad; Monty Python’s Spamalot; and The Who’s Tommy.

Tommy was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and won five when it was originally ran on Broadway from 1993 to 1995. Spamalot, meanwhile, was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and won three, including Best Musical, in 2005.

A number of well-known film and television actors received nominations including Rachel McAdams, Jessica Lange, Jeremy Strong and Radcliffe, with the Harry Potter star earning his first Tony nomination. However, Steve Carell, who made his Broadway debut in Uncle Vanya, didn’t receive a nomination, after the revival mixed reviews.

The 2024 Tony Awards will be held on Sunday, June 16 at 8:00 p.m. ET at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. Tony-nominated actress-singer Ariana DeBose is returning to host the show for the third time.

The ceremony will air live on CBS and on Paramount+ with Showtime. Paramount+ Essential subscribers can watch the special on demand the next day.
