Guillermo del Toro is casting the aptly named Mia Goth as the Bride of Frankenstein in his upcoming adaptation of the Mary Shelley classic for Netflix. Also appearing in the cast will be Andrew Garfield as Doctor Frankenstein and Oscar Isaac as the monster he created, and Christoph Waltz in a yet-to-be-disclosed role. It’s not yet known whether the film would be a period piece or whether it would have a contemporary setting.
Guillermo del Toro’s directorial projects have included Hellboy, Blade 2, and The Shape of Water. The 59-year-old Mexican director has been quoted as saying: “I’m doing Frankenstein. We’re working on it. We start shooting in February, and it’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein. I had an epiphany, and it’s basically a movie that required a lot of growth and a lot of tools that I couldn’t have done 10 years ago. Now I’m brave or crazy enough or something, and we’re gonna tackle it. It’s Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, and we’re working on it.”
For more than a century, the Frankenstein story has been piquing the interest of filmmakers. One of the earliest films was James Whale’s iconic 1931 movie starring Boris Karloff and Colin Clive.
All have been based on Mary Shelley’s equally iconic novel: Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus. The novel narrates the nefarious doings of Victor Frankenstein, a “mad scientist” who creates a living creature out of dead material.
Rejected by his creator for his repulsive ugliness, the monster turns to a life of destruction and revenge.
Mia Goth is no stranger to the horror-thriller genre, having recently appeared in X, Pearl, and Infinity Pool. Among Oscar Isaac’s recent projects have been HBO’s Scenes from a Marriage and the Marvel series Moon Knight. He was also cast as Kurt Vonnegut in the Helltown series. Andrew Garfield, acclaimed for his work in The Amazing Spider-Man series, recently appeared in Under the Banner of Heaven and will soon be starring with Florence Pugh in StudioCanal’s We Live in Time. Christoph Waltz had earlier voiced the character of Count Volpe in del Toro’s Pinocchio.
