Mass shootings and gun violence are all too common in the United States, and one of the main arguments made by those who oppose restrictions on gun ownership is that mental health is the root cause. It’s possible that both can be at fault, a concept compellingly explored in the new film The Mental State, which meets at the intersection of the two epidemics.
I had the chance to speak with director James Camali and actress Alyssa Sutherland about tackling these topics.
They discussed the resonance and response they noted on the film festival circuit and what the film means to both of them.
