Neon has dropped a new teaser for Park Chan-wook’s latest outing, “No Other Choice” has been chosen by the Korean Film Council to represent the country in the best international feature category at the 98th Academy Awards.
Neon has North American rights to the film, which is financed and produced by Korean studio CJ ENM, reuniting the distributor and studio behind Bong Joon Ho’s multiple Oscars winner “Parasite“ in 2020.
At the Venice Film Festival, where it is competing for the Golden Lion, the dark comedy, which is based on Donald E. Westlake’s novel ‘The Ax’, has had its premiere.
Lee Byung-hun, who is best known internationally for his role in “Squid Game,” takes on the role of Yoo Mansouu, a paper industry veteran who is forced to resort to desperate and murderous actions after 25 years of loyalty are suddenly abandoned. “No Other Choice” has received praise from critics for its humane and mordant humor, making it one of the Park’s most human works yet.
Korea continues to support bold and auteur-driven films during awards season. Parasite’s historic 2020 Oscar win raised the bar for Korean cinema on the international stage, and Park’s latest effort is a continuation of that.
The film opens the Busan International Film Festival and producer CJ ENM is releasing it in Korea on Sept. 24. The Oscar international feature shortlist will be announced on Dec. 16 and the final five nominees will be announced on Jan. 22.
