The proposed merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery is expected to have a major impact on the entertainment industry. If it happens, the merger would significantly affect the way creative content would be delivered via the two streaming services: Paramount+ and HBO Max.
According to a report by Bloomberg, Paramount Skydance’s CEO David Ellison hopes to merge the two entities in the belief that such a move “will allow more people to see the work of film and TV show creators.” Eilison is reportedly convinced that Paramount will be more appealing to customers if it includes the Warner Bros. content in its offerings to them. Furthermore, Ellison is reportedly hopeful that having the Warner Bros. catalogue will make Paramount+ a more exciting proposition for its consumers.
The report adds that the cable networks of the two entities would likely remain intact under a potential merger. Since there are no plans to sell or spin off the cable networks of the two businesses, this would enable Paramount’s CBS News to share content with CNN, which is the flagship property of CNN Discovery, a division of Warner Bros. Discovery.
As things now stand, Paramount+ has a strong foothold in children’s content, including such offerings as SpongeBob SquarePants, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In addition, Warner Bros. Discovery has most of DC’s animated series and most offerings by the Cartoon Network, as well as powerhouse franchises like Batman, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings.
While there is no official confirmation that a merger is imminent, it has been reported in recent days that Paramount has made a third proposal to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, which could be the biggest merger the entertainment industry has seen in several decades. Last week, Reuters reported that the board of Warner Bros. had rejected an offer from Paramount in the neighborhood of $50 billion.
