The 41st Independent Spirit Awards were announced yesterday, and Clint Bentley’s ”Train Dreams” won the top award for Best Film, alongside Best Director and Best Cinematography.
The film first screened at Sundance last year and was later released on Netflix in November, receiving critical praise and four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and screenplay.
Despite being the main winner of the night, ”Sorry, Baby” was also successful and won Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Performance for Naomi Ackie.
Other film winners were Rose Byrne taking Best Lead Performance for “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” Kayo Martin’s work in “The Plague” taking Best Breakthrough Performance Winner, “The Perfect Neighbor” winning Best Documentary, “The Secret Agent” winning Best International Film, “The Testament of Ann Lee” snagging Best Editing, and “This Island” taking the John Cassavetes Award.
”Adolescence” won Best New Scripted Series and also won performances for the lead (Stephen Graham), supporting (Erin Doherty), and breakthrough (Owen Cooper) on the TV front.
“Pee-wee as Himself” won Best Non-Scripted Series and “Chief of War” won Best Ensemble Cast, among other TV winners.
