Mubi has captured the rights to Nicolas Winding Refn’s new feature “Her Private Hell” for all of Latin America as well as the United Kingdom Ireland, Italy, and Spain. Neon International will be managing the film’s distribution in North America.
Winding Refn, who was born in Copenhagen in 1970 and partially grew up in New York, wrote the script with Esti Giordani and is also serving as the producer. Executive producers areTakuma Takasaki, Kimberly Willming, Christina Erritzoe, and Lene Borglum.
The project will be Mubi’s first feature film since 2017, when it released “The Neon Demon”. “Her Private Hell” is expected to open later this year at the Cannes Film Festival.
A number of other films by Winding Refn had recently premiered at Cannes, including “Only God Forgives” in 2013 and “Drive” in 2011, the latter of which earned him a best director prize. Winding Refn has also created a number of television specials including “Too Old to Die Young” for Amazon, “Copenhagen Cowboy” for Netflix, and a children’s series for the BBC and ZDF entitled “The Famous Five”. His first English-language film, “Fear X”(2003) starred John Turturro and won a best screenplay award at the 2004 Fantasporto Film Festival.
Shot in Tokyo last year, “Her Private Hell” stars an international cast that includes Sophia Thatcher, Charles Melton, Havana Rose Liu, Kristina Frusetti, Diego Calva, Shori Kutsuna, Aoi Yamada, and Hidetoji Nishijima.

Mubi’s recent slate of offerings also includes Joachim Trier’s Oscar-winning “Sentimental Value”, Kleber de Mendonça Filho’s “The Secret Agent”, Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident”, and Akinola Davies’ “My Father’s Shadow”, all of which were shown at Cannes. Mubi has also acquired some territorial rights to Markus Schleinzer’s black-and-white period drama “Rose”, which premiered in Berlin and earned a best actress award for its star, Sandra Hiller.
