Blending classical dance elegance with visceral scares, the new film Pretty Lethal delivers a bold new entry in the action thriller genre. Set against a haunting backdrop, the movie reimagines ballerinas as warriors, transforming discipline and precision into deadly force. Driven by a dynamic ensemble, the drama fuses horror, action and dark comedy into a kinetic, genre-bending experience.
Vicky Jewson directed, and Kate Freund wrote, the film. The thriller stars Iris Apatow, Lana Condor, Millicent Simmonds, Avantika, Maddie Ziegler, Michael Culkin, Lydia Leonard and Uma Thurman.
Pretty Lethal follows five ballerinas, who are on their way to a prestigious dance competition, are barely on speaking terms when their bus breaks down in a remote forest. With no other options, they reluctantly seek shelter at an unsettling roadside inn run by Devora Kasimer (Thurman), a reclusive former ballet prodigy.
From the moment the young dancers arrive, something feels wrong. Their worst instincts ultimately prove to be right. As the situation turns deadly, the fractured team must set aside their rivalries and weaponize years of brutal training, turning grace, discipline and even pointe shoes into tools for survival.
Pretty Lethal had its World Premiere in the Headliner Section of this year’s SXSW Film Festival, where it was presented by the Louisville Film Office. The festival hosted the premiere on March 13 at the Paramount Theatre in Austin. The drama then began streaming globally on Prime Video on March 25, courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios.
To help promote Pretty Lethal’s world premiere at SXSW and its subsequent release on Prime Video, Jewson generously took time to talk aout helming the feature on the afternoon of its festival screening. The filmmaker discussed the project during an exclusive interview, whose video can be viewed above.
