Two teams of writers have taken on the task of adapting the board game “Monopoly” into a film, with Lionsgate is producing the film, as well as LuckyChap and Hasbro Entertainment.

Deadline reports that two scripts are currently in development – one by “Minecraft Movie” scribes Neil Widener and Gavin Jessica, and the other by “Dumb Money” writers Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum.

The studios are reportedly expected to have two separate templates, and they will probably hire a single script from those. The four writers replace acclaimed “Spider-Man: Homecoming” scribes and “Game Night” directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who had closed a deal to pen the movie a year ago – the other version being scrapped.

The game of Monopoly, which started in 1935, sees players competing to acquire properties, construct buildings and hotels, all while trying to avoid going to jail and bankruptcy.

Multiple efforts to transform the game into a film have occurred over nearly two decades, with nobody succeeding. Film directors Ridley Scott and Tim Story were also connected at some point.

Lionsgate bought Hasbro’s film and TV division eOne in December 2024, acquiring the rights to “Monopoly” at that time.
