The official U.S. trailer for the sci-fi drama “Sheep in the Box,” directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, a renowned filmmaker of “Shoplifters” and “Monster,” made its debut in the competition section at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The tale takes place in a Japan just a bit ahead in time, where drones handle deliveries, vehicles are powered by electricity, and generative AI has infiltrated many aspects of domestic life.
Architect Otone (Haruka Ayase) and her carpenter husband Kensuke (Daigo) are deeply mourning the loss of their young son.
The company produces AI-controlled life-like figures of the departed, allowing families a replacement and a sense of continuity. The release of “Sheep in the Box” is planned for July 24th in New York and Los Angeles, with subsequent expansions to other cities through distributor Neon across the country.
