The horror film Demonic, from director Neill Blomkamp, will be distributed in the United States by IFC Midnight. The film, written and directed by Blomkamp, comes from AGC Studios and already has distribution from a number of different companies in Canada, Europe, Asia, and Oceania after a successful stint at EFM. Demonic is slated for release on August 20th, 2021.
Carly Pope, who previously starred in Blomkamp’s second film, Elysium, leads a cast that includes Chris William Martin and Michael Rogers as the main character in this supernatural horror film in which “a young woman unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades old rift between mother and daughter are ruthlessly revealed.” This marks Blomkamp’s fourth feature film. His first, District 9, earned multiple Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture, for its sci-fi portrait of an apartheid system in place in South Africa for extraterrestrial aliens. His subsequent films, Elysium and Chappie, both presented a creative look at how society might function in the near future based on technological advances that allow history to repeat itself in only slightly modified ways.
Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, conveyed her excitement about Blomkamp’s transition to horror with this project: “Neil Blomkamp exploded onto the filmmaking scene with DISTRICT 9 and has made his mark by creating films that challenge and subvert the genre.
It’s exciting to work together on this highly anticipated new vision, and be immersed in yet another world terrifyingly similar to our own.” Stuart Ford, AGC Chairman and CEO, added that “IFC Midnight is an ideal brand for Neill’s first foray into supernatural terror to be released theatrically and in other media and we’re very confident in the job that Arianna and her team are going to do.

IFC Midnight is a sister label for IFC Films, which is based in New York City and owned by AMC Networks. It was established in 2000 and has been a pioneer of on-demand and digital distribution well ahead of the coronavirus pandemic during which at-home releases have become increasingly popular.
The Rental and Relic are two recent success stories, while Werewolves Within and Hatching are among the films next on the docket.
