David O. Russell Makes Linda Ronstadt Film With Selena Gomez

David O.Russell has been selected to direct a biopic about singer Linda Ronstadt, which is now in pre-production. In it,  Selena Gomez will be playing the singer, who retired in 2011, later disclosing she could no longer sing due to progressive supranuclear palsy.

Like Ronstadt, Gomez is also of Mexican heritage. She can be currently seen on her cooking show Selena + Chef and as a lead in the mystery-comedy series Only Murders in the Building.

The film’s producers include Ronstadt’s manager John Boylan as well as James Keach, who in 2019 produced a documentary entitled Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice, directed by Rob Epstein.

An iconic singer in the genres of country, rock ‘n’ roll and Latin music, Ronstadt is best known for her albums “Heart Like a Wheel” and “Simple Dreams,” both released in the 1970s, Over the years, she made 29 albums, winning eleven Grammys. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.

Texas-born, the 31-year-old Gomez began her career as a child actress who starred in the children’s television series Barney & Friends from 2002 to 2004. As a teenager, she rose to prominence for her leading role as Alex Russo on the Disney Channel sitcom Wizards of Waverly Place from 2007 to 2012. Signing with Hollywood Records in 2008, Gomez formed a pop rock band called Selena Gomez & The Scene. The group released three studio albums, all of which were certified as gold or higher by the RIAA. She later signed with Interscope Records and released a number of top-10 recordings, including the single “Lose You to Love Me,” which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2020.

David O.Russell, an Oscar-nominated director and writer, helmed several acclaimed films over the pat quarter century, including Three Kings (1999), The Fighter (2010), Silver Linings Playbook (2012) and American Hustle (2013). Most recently, he directed Amsterdam (2022), a mystery-comedy that starred Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington. He is currently working on Super Toys with Keke Palmeer and Sacha Baron Cohen.

No word has yet been released about other cast members or when the Ronstadt biopic will be released.
