Mads Mikkelsen is the Latest Addition to Indiana Jones 5

Actor Mads Mikkelsen has been announced as a new cast member for the upcoming Indiana Jones sequel, as first reported by Deadline. Just last week, Phoebe Waller-Bridge from Fleabag joined Harrison Ford in the next film. At that time, John Williams was confirmed to be returning as composer in the film, which will be directed by James Mangold and produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Simon Emanuel, and Steven Spielberg, who directed the first four installments in the franchise. The film is slated for a July 29, 2022 release.

Mikkelsen has been very active lately. Late last year, he was chosen as the official replacement for Johnny Depp as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3. He stars in Another Round, an Oscar nominee for Best Director and Best International Feature, as a high school teacher who undertakes an experiment to keep his blood alcohol level at a stable high. He won the European Film Award for his performance.

The Danish actor is well-known by American audiences for his villainous turn in the James Bond film Casino Royale and his role as Dr. Hannibal Lecter in NBC’s TV series Hannibal. He has also appeared in big-budget blockbusters like Doctor Strange, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Chaos Walking. His next film, Riders of Justice, will have a limited release in the US on May 14th.

Though there are no details yet about what part Mikkelsen will play in the film, there are sure to be many theories circulating before production actually begins. Cate Blanchett portrayed the main nemesis in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and it seems likely that Mikkelsen will at least play someone who starts out as a bad guy given the long list of similar roles in his credits.

Thirteen years have passed since the release of the fourth film in the series and even since this upcoming movie was announced back in 2016. This long-awaited film has undergone many developments, including the recent departure of screenwriter David Koepp and the return of Jonathan Kasdan, who wrote the original Raiders of the Lost Ark.
