“Dances with Wolves” director Kevin Costner finally returns to a directorial chair for his passion project “Horizon” with a new addition of the cast, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington and “Stranger Things” star Jamie Campbell Bower.
It will be Costner’s first directorial film since 2003’s “Open Range,” and he aims to make it as a trilogy, this massive undertaking will be a sweeping chronicle of the settlement of the American West over a 15-year span, including the American Civil War. Through the eyes of many, the story will explore interactions with the Indigenous people in the American West before the arrival of colonizers seeking to settle their land.
Despite only three films as a director, Costner had massive success behind the camera. “Dances With Wolves” won seven Oscars at the 63rd annual Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. “Open Range” had a critical success as well. However, Costner’s film between those two, 1997’s “The Postman,” was a disaster. Critics and audiences hated it equally, barely making around $20 million at the box office off an $80 million budget.
Worthington expressed his feeling towards the latest film, “I am very excited and humbled to go on this incredible and important journey with Kevin, who is one of the industry’s finest and inspiring storytellers.” Worthington stars next in James Cameron‘s highly anticipated “Avatar: The Way Of Water,” in theaters this December. As for Miller, “I am so excited to go on this epic journey with such a legendary actor and director at the helm. The story is riveting. I am very honored to be a part of it.” She just wrapped filming on Kristen Scott Thomas‘s directorial debut “My Mother’s Wedding.” Other recent projects include Netflix‘s “Anatomy Of A Scandal” limited series. Meanwhile, Bower arguably stole the latest season of “Stranger Things” as Vecna.
Costner will produce through his Territory Pictures. He wrote the script with Jon Baird. Warner Bros./New Line will come aboard to release the film. Western epic, “Horizon” is set to begin filming in Utah at the end of the month.
