Cathy Yan (“Birds of Prey,” “Dead Pigs”) will executive produce and direct the live-action series “Paprika,” based on the Yasutaka Tsutsui novel of the same name, for Amazon Studios and Hivemind, according to Deadline.

The original book is widely acknowledged as Yasutaka Tsutsui’s masterpiece which unites his surreal, quirky imagination with a mind-bending narrative about a psychiatric institute that has developed the technology to invade people’s dreams.

As for the story itself, when prototype models of a dream-invading device go missing at the Institute for Psychiatric Research, it transpires that someone is using them to drive people insane. Threatened both personally and professionally, brilliant psychotherapist Atsuko Chiba has to journey into the world of fantasy to fight her mysterious opponents. As she delves ever deeper into the imagination, the borderline between dream and reality becomes increasingly blurred, and nightmares begin to leak into the everyday realm. The scene is set for a final showdown between the dream detective and her enemies, with the subconscious as their battleground, and the future of the waking world at stake.

The novel became popular worldwide after director Satoshi Kon adapted it into an anime feature.

Released in 2006, the thrilling film became Kon’s fourth and final movie before his untimely death.

Along with Yan, her producing partner Ash Sarohia will also executive produce under their Rewild banner, as well as Masi Oka, and Hivemind’s Jason F. Brown.

Yan gained her recognition as a director of “Birds of Prey” for Warner Bros and LuckyChap Entertainment centering on the DC Comic character Harley Quinn and she also garnered the Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for her episode of “Succession, “The Disruption.”
