A live-action series about the origin of King Kong is in early development by Disney Branded Television. The upcoming show is set to stream on Disney+, Deadline is reporting.

Deals have just closed for the drama, whose working title is simply King Kong, and will be produced by James Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster. The project marks the first live-action series set in the King Kong universe.

King Kong will be a serialized action-adventure drama that brings the story of the classic titular monster into the modern age. The show, which will be set on Skull Island, feature the dawn of a new King Kong. It will explore the mythology of the eponymous character’s origin and the supernatural mysteries of his home.

The upcoming series was written by Paper Girls creator Stephany Folsom. It’s based on IP from Merian C. Cooper’s original books and the new King Kong novelizations by Joe DeVito, who partnered with the Merian C. Cooper Estate on the books. Besides writing the original novels, Cooper also served as the director and a producer on the original 1933 King Kong film.

Besides writing the teleplays, Folsom, who’s also working on Prime Video’s upcoming fantasy show, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, is also executive producing the upcoming project with Wan, Michael Clear and Rob Hackett for Atomic Monster. Dannie Festa and Marc Manus are also executive producing King Kong for World Builder Entertainment.

The upcoming Disney+ drama has no connection to the live-action series, King Kong Skull Island, which was in development at MarVista Entertainment and IM Global Television five years ago with a different creative team. However, King Kong Skull Island, which was also based on Cooper’s King Kong and DeVito ArtWorks’ Skull Island, didn’t come to fruition.

King Kong has been the subject of several movies since its inception 90 years ago. The character was most recently featured in Legendary/Warner Bros’ Monsterverse, which includes 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters and last year’s Godzilla vs. Kong.
