Documentarians Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds are reportedly in talks with Amazon Prime to screen their upcoming film about the late Canadian-born comic actor John Candy.

The film, yet untitled, is being produced by Reynolds together with George Dewey’s production company, Maximum Effort. It has the blessing of Candy’s widow and children, and will include home videos and family interviews.

Candy, who appeared in such films as Cool Runnings, Home Alone, Spaceballs, Uncle Buck, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles, died of a heart attack at the age of 43 in 1994.

When Colin Hanks was but eight years old, his parents Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson had appeared with Candy in the 1985 comedy Volunteers. Candy and Tom Hanks had also co-starred in Splash a year earlier. Paying tribute to Candy in an earlier interview, the elder Hanks called him “one of the great gifts of humankind.”

“I don’t think he ever met a person he didn’t have a great conversation with. I don’t think he ever met a person who didn’t feel they were lucky to have been able to chat with John for a while,” said Tom Hanks in a 1999 appearance on Inside the Actors Studio. “And I must say that the gregariousness that he had was actually born of how big his heart was.”

Among Colin Hanks’s other projects have been the Jumanji films and FX’s Fargo, the latter of which won him an Emmy nomination. He also directed ESPN’s 30 for 30 TV series as well as such films as Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis and All Things Must Pass, about the rise and fall of Tower Records.

The upcoming documentary will not be the first tribute to Candy. In March 2019 to mark the 25th anniversary of the comedian’s death, Ryan Reynolds released a video montage that he called “a small tribute to a comedic genius and Canadian hero…[who] was a treasure.”
