Carl Erik Rinsch, a film director, was sentenced to prison this week for defrauding Netflix out of $11 million by claiming to have created a TV series that never materialized.

CBS News reported that a federal prosecutor’s spokesperson stated that the director of “47 Ronin” has been convicted of wire fraud, money laundering, and other charges.

According to prosecutors, Netflix initially offered Rinsch around $44 million for an unfinished sci-fi series called ‘Conquest’ (aka “White Horse“), and thereafter sent him an additional $11 million to cover the production costs.

Rinsch put the cash in a personal account instead of using it for the show, which was later used for failed investments and cryptocurrency. In addition, he spent lavishly on things like multiple Rolls-Royces, a Ferrari, and luxury bedding worth over $1 million, and paid off nearly $2 million in credit card charges.

Rinsch’s sentencing date is scheduled for April because he did not finish the show. It was reported that the trial lasted for less than two weeks.

Various projects were handled by the filmmaker during the late 2000s, which included a reboot of “Alien” and remakes of “Logan’s Run” and “Creature from the Black Lagoon“.
