Amazon and MGM Studios have unveiled the trailer for Peter Farrelly’s “I Play Rocky,” a biographical film about the genesis of the iconic 1976 boxing movie “Rocky” and the character Rocky Balboa.
Anthony Ippolito portrays the young Sylvester Stallone, an actor facing financial struggles due to partial facial paralysis and a speech disorder, who has penned a script that an influential film studio desires to acquire, though he steadfastly declines to part with it, insisting he must take the starring role.
In the face of a lucrative offer, he opted for meager pay, choosing instead to work for minimal compensation to get his film produced with him as the lead actor. Also featured are Matt Dillon, AnnaSophia Robb, P.J. Byrne, Toby Kebbell, Tracy Letts, Jay Duplass, and Kiki Seto as Talia Shire Stephan James as Carl Weathers.
“Rocky,” indeed, went on to become the top box office draw of 1976, earning ten Oscar nominations and scooping Best Picture before establishing a lucrative franchise. Farrelly directs from the screenplay penned by Peter Gamble. Christian Baha, Toby Emmerich, and Farrelly are the producers.
The film will enter limited release on November 6th prior to a broader release on November 20th, in sync with the 50th anniversary of the original “Rocky,” which debuted in theaters on November 21st, 1976.
