A teaser trailer for Mike Flanagan‘s “The Exorcist: Martyrs“, featuring Scarlett Johansson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, John Leguizamo, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, and Sasha Calle, has been unveiled.
The project acts as a complete refresh of the franchise, with director Flanagan and creator of “Midnight Mass,” along with “Doctor Sleep,” given free rein to explore the narrative in any direction they desire.
Thirteen years ago, New York City detective Julie Miller (Johansson) concluded the satanic terror spree of Father Sunday. Because she was recognized as a hero by the case, she has been fully engrossed in her work. A fresh horror now pens her surname in a priest’s blood on the walls of a church crypt, dragging her back into the darkness she thought she had laid to rest with him.
With the help of former prison chaplain Father William (Chiwetel Ejiofor), who heard Father Sunday’s final confession, and the quick rookie detective Gina Restrepo (Sasha Calle), Detective Miller will uncover a thread binding a series of serial killers, including H.H. Holmes compared it to the Zodiac, saying it could corrupt everything and everyone, with an evil far greater than mortal limits.
Many of Flanagan’s regulars from his limited series works like “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Fall of the House of Usher” are set to co-star, including Rahul Kohli, Carla Gugino, Hamish Linklater, Gil Bellows, Carl Lumbly, Robert Longstreet, Matt Biedel, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., and Benjamin Pajak.
Flanagan has previously said he’s aiming to make the scariest movie he’s made. “The Exorcist: Martyrs” will open in cinemas in March next year while Flanagan’s reinvention of “Carrie” has just been released on Prime Video.
“The Exorcist: Martyrs” is only in theaters March 12th.
