Queen fans will be delighted to learn that a sequel to Bohemian Rhapsody is potentially in the works, according to guitarist Brian May. In an Instagram Live chat, as reported by IndieWire, May teased, “We are looking at it. Yeah, we have been looking at ideas. It’s going to be hard to follow that one as none of us could have predicted how massive that was going to be.

We put a lot of heart and soul into making it and no one could have predicted as it was bigger than Gone with the Wind. But yes, we are thinking maybe it could happen, but it would have to be a great script.

It’s going to take a while to figure that out.

This contradicts information that May gave Rolling Stone last May, when he shared “Don’t think we didn’t think about it. We’ve talked. Basically we think not, at the moment. Things could change, I suppose, but I think it would be difficult…I’m not saying it’s impossible because there is a great story there, but we don’t feel that’s the story we want to tell at the moment.”

Bohemian Rhapsody was poorly received by critics when it was released in 2018 but turned out to be a tremendous financial success. It grossed over $900 million globally on a budget of just $52 million. Additionally, it was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning four of them, including for Best Actor Rami Malek, who played frontman Freddie Mercury, and Best Film Editing, despite relentless criticism of the compilation of one scene that still fills editor John Ottman with regret. That film ends with Queen’s Live Aid concert in 1985, and a sequel might pick up after that point.
