The source material for the 1996 Oscar winner for Best Picture, The English Patient, is going to reimagined as a TV series. Deadline reports that the BBC is creating a series based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Michael Ondaatje, which will be a coproduction between Miramax Television and Paramount Television Studios. The series, which is still in development, comes from Emily Ballou, a writer known for Run, Taboo, Humans, and The Slap.

The film version of The English Patient was a critically-acclaimed success, following four individuals coming together at the end of World War II in Italy, including a badly scarred burn victim whose past is explored through flashbacks. The film, directed by the late Anthony Minghella, was nominated for twelve Academy Awards and won nine, including the Best Picture prize, Best Director for Minghella, and Best Supporting Actress for Juliette Binoche.

Early reports indicate that this new series will be a different look at the book rather than a remake of the film. The four main characters – an English burn victim, a Canadian nurse, a Sikh soldier, and a Canadian thief – were played by Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, Naveen Andrews, and Willem Dafoe, respectively, and there is no word on who will fill their parts in the TV version. Kristin Scott Thomas’ Katharine Clifton was also considered a leading role in the film.

This is the latest in a series of TV projects commissioned by Miramax TV under the leadership of Head of Worldwide Television Marc Helwig that serves as a new take on an existing movie in TV form. A show based on the book Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is headed to Apple TV+ with Justin Timberlake, and both Mimic and The Gentlemen are set to be turned into television programs as well.
