Paramount has tapped Miles Teller to star in its update of the 1982 blockbuster An Officer and a Gentleman, which originally starred Richard Gere. Dana Fox is writing the script for the reboot, working on a draft written by Matt Johnson. The news was first reported by Deadline.

This will not be the first time Teller will have played a military pilot. In 2022, he starred as Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw in Top Gun: Maverick, which earned more than $1.4 billion worldwide and was nominated for six Academy Awards, including one for best picture. 

The original An Officer and a Gentleman narrated the struggles of Zack Mayo, played by Gere, a Navy flier who clashes with his drill instructor Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley, played by Louis Gossett, Jr. That year, Gossett made history by being the first Black actor to win an Oscar for best supporting actor. Also starring in the picture was Debra Wagner, playing the role of Zack’s romantic partner, Paula.

Miles Teller made his movie debut in the 2010 film Rabbit Hole. He’s also appeared in the Oscar-winning drama Whiplash. Other of his credits include The Spectacular Now and a remake of Paramount’s Footloose. Teller has also been seen in The Offer, a Godfather series for Paramount+. He recently played Michael Jackson’s lawyer on Michael, a biopic for Lionsgate, which debuts in 2025. Teller is also slated to star with Anya Taylor-Joy in Skydance’s The Gorge for Apple, also serving as executive producer for the film directed by Scott Derricksen.

The 1982 romantic drama An Officer and a Gentleman, which was directed by Taylor Hackford from a script by Douglas Day Stewart, raked in $190 at the global box office and was nominated for six Academy Awards. In addition to Gossett’s trophy, film also won a statuette for best original song, “Up Where We Belong,” with lyrics by Will Jennings and music by Jack Nitzsche and Buffy Saint-Marie.
