In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, producer Jerry Bruckheimer offered an update on the status of two upcoming films in the Pirates of the Caribbean and Top Gun franchises. Both films have been in development for some time.
Bruckheimer was quoted as saying, “I think it’s a horse race between the two of them, so we’ll see. Right now, Top Gun is a hair ahead, but that’s it. We’re expecting a script shortly [for Top Gun 3].” He also confirmed that he’s had a discussion with Margot Robbie about her participation in the Pirates film. Robbie had originally hoped to star in a spinoff, but that never materialized.
Bruckheimer also said that he expected johnny Depp would once again play the role of Jack Sparrow in a reboot “if it’s written well.” Two years ago, Bruckheimer had also confirmed that Jeff Nathanson was working on a reboot of the Pirates franchise after writing Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth installment in the series, which was released in 2017
Meanwhile, Tom Cruise recently said he’s “working on” a follow-up to Top Gun: Maverick (2022), as well as a sequel to his 1990 NASCAR drama Days of Thunder.
In May of 2025, it had been reported that Christopher McQuarrie had agreed to write the script for the new Top Gun film, but nothing had since been said about that possibility. Two weeks ago, it was announced that Oscar nominee Krysty Willson-Cairns was talking with Walt Disney Studios to write the screenplay for the sixth installment in the Pirates franchise. The Scottish-born Wilson-Cairns earned an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay for 1917, which she co-wrote with its director Sam Mendes. ..
Over the years, the 82-year-old Bruckheimer had produced many acclaimed films, including Flashdance, Days of Thunder, The Rock, Armageddon, Enemy of the State, Black Hawk Down, and Pearl Harbor.
