Deadline reported that NBC has unveiled plans for “Gatsby,” a police procedural TV series based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.”
Given that the original novel entered the public domain in 2021, it seems like the plan is to do something similar to what was done with the Sherlock Holmes books – essentially turning the property into a modern day episodic procedural drama, just like “Elementary” and “Watson” did.
In this series, both Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway happened to be contemporary cops – with Carraway being genderswapped. The series comes from writers and executive producers Jake Coburn and Jason Tracey (“Elementary”).
Here, Jay Gatsby is portrayed as a devilishly charming investigator and detective, possessing a con-man’s knack for understanding human behavior. Decorated New York State Police Officer, Nicole ‘Nicky’ Carraway was ‘born to be a cop but her dream was to become a writer.
There is no clear indication of how much DNA the series will share with the novel, but there has been speculation. Can the Valley of Ashes be considered as a nightclub? The green light motif appears in the murder plot; how will Daisy be involved?
The series currently has no production schedule, making it unclear when production will begin.
