Warner Bros. Hires a Tony Nominated Playwright Matthew Lopez to Write ‘Bodyguard’ Remake Script

The Inheritance playwright Matthew López has signed on to pen the screenplay for Warner Bros.’ remake of the 1992 romantic drama, The Bodyguard.

Starring Kevin Costner and the late Whitney Houston, the blockbuster was about a Secret Service agent who falls in love with the imperiled pop star he was hired to protect.

It includes Houston’s hit songs, “I Will Always Love You,” “I Have Nothing” and “Run to You.”

No casting or director have been announced yet for the updated version of the film, but Variety said pairings such as Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, and Channing Tatum and Cardi B have been pitched to the studio over the years.

Deadline reported Lawrence Kasdan, Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are producing the remake, while Nick Reynolds will serve as executive producer. Kasdan wrote and produced the original movie, which Mick Jackson directed.

López is an Olivier Award and Drama Desk Award winner, and Tony nominee. Elle magazine said he is also working on a musical remake of the movie, Some Like It Hot, and a film adaptation of the novel, Leading Men.
