After a highly anticipated premiere of Martin Scorsese’s latest outing, “Killers of the Flower Moon” at the Cannes Film Festival, an American auteur stayed in Europe and went to Italy over the weekend and attended the Rome conference at the Vatican where he met with Pope Francis and announced that he will make a film about Jesus.

At the conference, – titled “The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination,” forty poets and writers from different countries showed up to participate at the Scorsese’s meeting was with none other than Pope Francis himself, whom Scorsese and his wife Helen Morris met in a brief private audience which was organized by Jesuit publication La Civiltà Cattolica and Georgetown University.

“I have responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus,”  “And I’m about to start making it,” the director added, suggesting that this could be his next film. 

Regarding cinematic references, during the conversation Scorsese also cited his admiration for Pier Paolo Pasolini’s “The Gospel According to St. Matthew” to discussing his own religious-themed films like “The Last Temptation of Christ” and “Silence”.

He’s also participating in a series of screenings of his body of works, he will present on Monday at Rome’s Casa del Cinema cinematheque; a master class on Tuesday for students of Rome’s Centro Sperimentale film school; and an onstage conversation on Friday in Bologna where he will be a guest of the Cineteca di Bologna, the film archives that run the Il Cinema Ritrovato festival dedicated to heritage film.

While we’re eagerly waiting for Martin Scorsese’s next picture “Killers of the Flower Moon,” fans of the acclaimed director can anticipate to his next project.
