Y: The Last Man has been officially cancelled, after its potential second season failed to be picked up by a new network, Collider is reporting. The news comes after the post-apocalyptic series’ first season premiered on September 13, 2021 on FX on Hulu, which later took the project off of its slate of content the following month. The first season finale, which debuted on November 1, will now serve as the drama’s series ending-episode.
After FX on Hulu took Y: The Last Man off of its slate of content, the show’s executives started to look for a new home network for the project. However, the drama was ultimately not picked up for a sophomore season.
Series creator, Eliza Clark announced the news of the project’s official cancellation to fans, who were hoping the show would get at least one more season, on Twitter. In her post, the television writer, who also served as an executive producer on Y: The Last Man, thanked the many fans who supported the production while executives shopped it around for a new host network.
In her tweet, Clark also said working on the inaugural season of the drama, which is based on the comic book series of the same name by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, as “the best creative work environment.” She continued that she was “immensely proud of the work that we did.” The creator-producer also shared her happiness that the production was given the chance to have a first season, as many shows never even make it to the air.
Clark also noted that she also felt joy in being able to turn her favorite comic into a television series, which was in development for over a decade. She also noted that she enjoyed sharing the stories she loved from the franchise with television audiences. She concluded her tweet by referring to Y: The Last Man as “the one that got away,” and promises her followers that she’ll be moving on to write new shows.
Y: The Last Man took place in a post-apocalyptic world after all mammals that carried a Y chromosome suddenly died. However, one man, Yorick Brown (Ben Schnetzer), and his pet monkey, Ampersand, mysteriously survived the world-changing event. Now a hot commodity to the rest of the world, Yorick struggles to decide who he can trust, all while fighting to survive.
The drama also starred Olivia Thirlby, Ashley Romans, Amber Tamblyn and Elliot Fletcher. Diane Lane also starred on the series, playing Yorick’s mother, Jennifer Brown, a Democratic U.S. Congresswoman who was promoted to the office of President of the United States after the incident.
Upon its initial release, Y: The Last Man‘s first season received mixed critical reviews, which led FX on Hulu to not renew it for a sophomore season. At that time, Clark responded by posting a tweet saying that “there is so much more left to tell.” In her her latest tweet, the show’s creator-producer also said that if it was renewed, the show would include “new twists on some of the best stories from the book (astronauts anyone?).”
