Oscar Nominees Announced – ‘The Power of the Dog’ Leads, ‘Drive My Car’ Makes the Cut in Best Picture

Nominations for the 94th Academy Awards were announced this morning by actors Leslie Jordan and Tracee Ellis Ross in twenty-three categories. The overall nominations leader is The Power of the Dog with 12 bids, including four acting nominations. Next up was Dune with ten bids, though it missed an expected mention for director Denis Villeneuve, followed by Belfast and West Side Story in third place with seven nominations each.

Drive My Car becomes the first Japanese film to be nominated for Best Picture, also securing nominations for director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, its screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. This follows its trifecta of wins for Best Film from the New York Film Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the National Society of Film Critics. Flee makes history with its three nominations in the international, documentary, and animated feature categories. Two other foreign-language films have multiple nominations this year, The Worst Person in the World and Parallel Mothers.

Among the surprising snubs are a near shut-out for House of Gucci, with only its makeup and hairstyling cited. In the Documentary Feature category, which annually boasts a startling omission, The Rescue is missing from the list this year. Aaron Sorkin, who last year failed to get an anticipated directing nomination for The Trial of the Chicago 7, was left off the list for his Being the Ricardos screenplay, with only three of his actors nominated to represent the film. Voters also swapped out actress Caitriona Balfe in the supporting actress race for her Belfast costar Judi Dench, and two smaller films on the bubble, Mass and Passing, both received zero nominations. Nightmare Alley made an unexpected appearance in the Best Picture category, receiving just three other nominations, while Licorice Pizza was the highest-profile nominated-film to underperform, securing mentions only for Best Picture, Directing, and Original Screenplay.
