Charlize Theron Getting Her Own Fast & Furious Spinoff

Charlize Theron Getting Her Own Fast & Furious Spinoff

It hasn’t even been a full week since F9: The Fast Saga hit theaters, and franchise star Charlize Theron is already returning for another installment. In a Variety article where she discussed another upcoming sequel, this one to The Old Guard, it was reported that Vin Diesel has writers working on a spinoff from the popular car racing movie series centered on Theron’s character, Cipher.

Cipher was first introduced in 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, the eighth chapter of the franchise, as the primary villain pulling the strings to get Diesel’s Dominic Toretto to do her malicious bidding. The cyberterrorist returned in F9 as a secondary antagonist, and though the size of her role was reduced, she still made an impression. It makes sense that she would be the next player in the series to get her own film, following Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which featured Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprising their roles, initially cast as bad guys who were eventually redeemed.

Diesel has been dropping a lot of information recently, including that he’s planning to end the franchise in 2024, with a tenth and eleventh film still on the way before then. Early last year, Diesel also confirmed that he was doing an all-female spinoff, though it’s not yet clear whether that will be one of the remaining two films or if this Cipher-led project could also be that film. As of this writing, F9 has already grossed $418 million worldwide, which is a third of what the eighth film made overall.

Theron is no stranger to action flicks, anchoring The Old Guard and Atomic Blonde, among others. She was nominated for an Oscar in 2019 for portraying journalist Megyn Kelly in Bombshell, her third nomination after previous bids for North Country and Monster, the latter of which won her the Best Actress prize in 2003. She is currently filming The School for Good and Evil, which is slated to premiere on Netflix sometime next year.
