John Wick: Chapter 4 Casts Mortal Kombat Actor Hiroyuki Sanada Opposite Keanu Reeves

Mortal Kombat star Hiroyuki Sanada has been cast in an undisclosed role in the upcoming action sequel, John Wick: Chapter 4. The actor, who also garnered attention last month when he appeared in Netflix’s Army of the Dead, will star alongside returning series star, Keanu Reeves, Collider is reporting.

It’s also being reported that Sanada will play a key character known as Watanabe in the franchise’s fourth installment. But there’s no word yet how the character will fit into the story, which hasn’t been revealed yet.

Sanada and Reeves will also appear on screen opposite Donnie Yen, Rina Sawayama and Shamier Anderson. The cast is expected to begin production on the third follow-up in the hit John Wick series this summer, and will shoot on location in France, Germany and Japan.

The next entry in the acclaimed neo-noir franchise will be directed by Chad Stahelski, who also helmed the previous three installments. Shay Hatten and Michael Finch wrote John Wick: Chapter 4, which is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 27, 2022 by Lionsgate. Stahelski. and Reeves are also set to produce the series’ next sequel.

After news of Sanada’s casting was announced, Stahelski expressed his excitement over being able to work with the actor. “Having long admired Hiroyuki as both actor and action performer, I’m thrilled and honored to welcome him to the John Wick family,” the filmmaker shared in a statement.

Besides MortaKombat and Army of the Dead, Sanada has also garnered fame for starring on HBO’s Emmy Award-winning sci-fi Western television show, Westworld. He’s also renowned for his star-making role in the award-winning historical drama, The Twilight Samurai. John Wick: Chapter 4 will reunite the actor with Reeves, after they previously starred together in the 2013 fantasy action movie, 47 Ronin.
